📍Last Sunday saw members competing in various parts of the United Kingdom. The nearest event to home was the Glasgow 10k, followed closely by the popular half-marathon which ran through Pollok Park and Bellahouston Park.
⛰The 10k started in George Square and headed up St. Vincent Street to be met by the sound of the rock choir after about a kilometre. The conditions for the race were excellent, with little wind and a good temperature for running.
Club members both participated and acted as pacers for this event. Fraser Armstrong, fresh from a number of good performances this year, ran extremely well, achieving a very welcome negative split in the process: 17:06 for the first 5k and then 16:51 which rewarded him with a 20-second PB, finishing in 33:57! Great running, Fraser!
Noelle Smith was the first female home in 44 minutes followed by Laura Ritchie, running her first 10k since the pandemic, in a time of 47:15. Helen Stevenson and Lisa Robertson were the other two Harriers to complete the event.
📣 Special shout out to our fantastic pacers, Melanie Ronald, Gordon Gallacher, and Mark Watson who did a fantastic job!
The half marathon route crossed the Kingston Bridge and headed down St. Andrews Drive towards Pollok Park. A large contingent of noisy Harrier supporters were waiting to see the club’s runners heading into (and out of) the park on their way to Bellahouston, and on to the finish at Glasgow Green. ☀️The conditions remained good and Jack Heathwood, to the delight of harrier supporters, was well up the field, as was Iain Carroll. Jack Heathwood, following his PB at Stirling 10k, and record-breaking run at Linwood Parkrun, maintained his form and finished in 12th place in a time of 1:10:54! Iain had another excellent run to finish in 1:13:32 to claim 27th place and 3rd V40 home. Picking up a Scottish Athletics bronze medal!
The third harrier home was Scott Mason in 1:18:45, claiming 79th place and 12th V40. Two other Harriers, Lee Shaw and Rhys Williams, were just outside the top 100.
Claire McCormick improved on her Great North Run time by almost two minutes to finish in 1:35:13. The second female Harrier on the day was Becky Simister in 1:43:39. Jill Mair claimed the third female Harriers place in a time of 1:52:35.
💙 More than 30 Harriers competed, some running the ‘Glasgow half’ for the first time in club colours alongside our more experienced half marathon runners. Congratulations to all those who completed the scenic course and thanks to pacers Jack Arnold and John Cunningham.
